14/08/25: The Pickwick gave ourselves too much to do in the second half of the season and ultimately fell just short of survival from relegation. A last match of the season win at home against Eltham Terrace Rack Pack was the minimum requirement to stand a chance. Our opponents obliged by only showing with 4 players. The Piledriver tickled a long black down the rail to clinch the first set, then Cobb followed up escaping a snooker to pot his last ball and land plum on the black. We were looking good at 4-1 up after set 1, and were sitting even prettier at 6-1. A fluked black knocked us back in frame 8, a mistake or two from our boys and the second set point fell from our grasp 6-4. The last set wasn't disimilar to the second. The Piledriver finished up, Cobb got a free frame. 2 Up with 3 to play. Another fluked black against us and then Bedtime played an amazing shot to cut a ball in, freeing up a trapped black, and then watched agonisingly as it trickled towards the corner pocket and fell in. Leighton was our last hope. The frame was scappy, but he got the black in the hole and that was all that mattered. 2-1 In sets and 9-6 in frames meant a 3 point haul. We waited for the Nolans score to come through, but alas they had mirrored our score and our efforts were in vein. Next summer the Pickwick will be in Tier 2.
The original venue.
The infamous pole that restricted cueing. Probably the MVP in the majority of the Pickwick's home match victories. Such an iconic landmark in the SE London pool scene that the pole has since become embraced as the team's logo.
The Pickwick Public House is now closed, and being converted to flats with a licenced premises situated within.
The Pickwick's home venue is now Blackheath Newbridge Social Club.
